De Quervain's Tendonitis
This condition is caused by inflammation of the tendons and surround sheath along the thumb side of the wrist provoking pain and tenderness usually when forming a fist, grasping, gripping or turning the wrist. There may also be swelling and an occasional ‘catching’ when moving the thumb. Symptoms can be improved with a period of rest of the thumb in a splint combined with topical anti-inflammatory medication. Steroid injections in the tendon sheath are also helpful in relieving the condition. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to open the compartment surrounding the tendons.
