For most patients, pain will decrease following spinal surgery, but for a small minority the pain may be different or worse than the previous pain. This is known as failed back syndrome and this needs to be managed carefully. Treatment may include medication optimisation, image guided spinal procedures, neuromodulation or in severe cases, spinal cold stimulation to reduce the brains perception of pain.
