The most common injury to the carpal bones, normally as a result of a fall onto an outstretched hand. Symptoms include pain, swelling and tenderness over the thumb side of the wrist. Scans may be required to confirm a fracture. Treatments include immobilisation of the wrist in a splint or cast for a period of 8-12 weeks. Surgery may be required in more severe cases including internal fixation of the scaphoid.
