Spine and Pain
Consultant Interventional Spine and Pain Physician

Dr. Nigel Kellow is a Consultant in Interventional
Spinal and Pain Medicine specialising in image
guided percutaneous procedures to treat spinal
problems and in managing complex painful conditions
such as chronic neuropathic disease and malignancy.

“I am a Consultant in Interventional Spinal and Pain
Medicine. I specialise in the investigation and management
of people who want to avoid spinal surgery, and those
who have persistent problems following spinal surgery.

Many of my patients have age related spinal problems.
These typically present as nerve pains in the arms or
legs (brachalgia and sciatica respectively), or pain in
the neck or back.  I also see patients who have spinal
problems as a consequence of osteoporosis or cancer.

I trained in medicine in London and did his postgraduate
studies in London, Oxford, Paris, and Cambridge, before
becoming a consultant in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care,
and Pain Medicine at Barts and the Royal London Hospital
in 1996.  While there I did an MBA at the London Business
School specialising in finance and operational efficiency.

I moved into full time private practice in 2002 and am
a founding partner of the London Orthopaedic Clinic.

My main office in London is at 30 Devonshire Street, but
I see and treat patients at The Wellington Hospital, King
Edward VII Hospital Sister Agnes, Princess Grace Hospital,
and The BUPA Cromwell Hospital.”

"I had wanted to be an orthopaedic surgeon since I was
in school, and I got prizes in anatomy and surgery at
university. But after I started to work as a doctor I found
I really enjoyed medical specialities, so I decided to go
into anaesthesia instead of orthopaedics to combine my
interest in acute medicine with the practicality of surgery."

"I did higher specialist training in Pain Medicine, which
is a small sub-speciality linked to anaesthesia, where
I specialised in treating patients with spinal disease,
neuropathic problems, and pain from tumours."
"I see patients with spinal disease as referrals from GPs
or physiotherapists and I specialise in helping them avoid
surgery if appropriate. However if they need surgery I
work very closely with the best spinal and neurosurgeons
in the country. I also get referrals from other consultants,
usually patients who have a difficult spinal or neuropathic
pain problem, or patients with pain from a malignancy."
"I think I'm a good listener. Many of my patients have
complex problems and I give them as much time as they
need. All of the procedures that I do are guided by the
latest imaging modalities. I generally use MRI and CT to
help diagnose the patient's problem and procedures are
guided by continuous x-ray screening, CT, or ultrasound.
I am lucky to have access to the best equipment and
hospital colleagues in the country."
"I help to develop new techniques and equipment and am
often amongst the first to bring new treatments to the UK.
I'm a member of the Interventional Pain Medicine Group of
the British Pain Society and my research has been widely
published in peer-reviewed medical journals."

"I have an adventurous streak, and I like exercise and
the outdoors.  I like any activities that involve mountains,
woodland, or water.  I love good design, healthy good
food, my close friends and family, and dogs."
