Dr Deane Halfpenny MBBCh FRCA FFPMRCA
Deane Halfpenny is a consultant in musculoskeletal pain medicine with a special interest in spinal pain and injury.
Career to Date
I graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa in 1990 (MBBCh) and completed my early medical training in the UK. I then went on to specialise over a six year period in anaesthesia, with 2 years research as a lecturer at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Subsequently I went on to complete an additional year of training in advanced pain medicine leading to accreditation with the faculty of pain medicine obtaining the FFPMRCA.
I became a consultant in 2001 at St Bartholomew’s and the Homerton Hospital in London. I was a clinical lead in the establishment of the City and Hackney Back Pain Service, where I have continued to provide clinical input into the management of back and neck pain. I work closely with exercise therapists running joint clinics allowing me to have unique understanding of pain and movement. I have set up interventional services in the management of pain for the NHS as well as the private sector and have gained invaluable experience in the field. I have published as well as lectured at international meetings and seminar in the field of pain medicine.

- Acute back, neck and shoulder pain.
- Chronic spinal pain.
- Myofascial pain syndromes
- Neuropathic pain
- Whiplash injury
- Complex regional pain syndrome
- Repetitive strain injury
Having been a keen gymnast competing at a national level in South Africa and lately a club cyclist I have a special interest in the management of pain in the sporting arena.
I have regular outpatient clinics at TLOC as well as intervention lists at the Princess Grace Hospital.
