Mr. Dean Michael MB BS FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Hip and Knee Specialist
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr Michael is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic
surgeon with a special interest in the management
of conditions of the hip and knee, specialising in hip
arthroscopy and minimally invasive techniques.
He also treats general trauma cases.

"I qualified from St Bartholomew's Hospital - St Bart's,
in 1994. After basic surgical training, I undertook my
orthopaedic training on the UCH/Middlesex training
rotation and also undertook specialist training in hip
and knee surgery at The Middlesex Hospital and
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In 2005,
I completed specialist hip and knee surgery fellowships
in Sydney working at the Orthosports Unit, The New
South Wales Institute of Sports Medicine and at the New
South Wales Orthopaedic Research Institute. I have been
a consultant at The Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Unit at
St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey since 2006."
"During my training, I worked with a number of incredibly
inspiring orthopaedic surgeons. I decided I wanted to
follow in their footsteps."

“Several of the orthopaedic consultants who inspired me
were hip and knee specialists who were at the very cutting
edge of hip and knee surgery. Successful hip and knee
surgery can have profound, life-changing benefits for the
patient. It is extremely gratifying to work in an area where,
in general, your work produces such improvements to
quality of life.”

"I am highly specialised in a number of new techniques.
I am particularly interested in minimally invasive hip
replacement and the use of computer navigation.
Minimally invasive (MIS) hip replacement minimises the
degree of surgical trauma and therefore reduces the risk
of blood transfusion and makes recovery more rapid."

"During my fellowship, I carried out a lot of work on the
use of computer navigation in orthopaedic surgery and
the majority of my knee replacements and hip resurfacings
are performed using computer navigation which improves
the accuracy of component placement and hopefully
implant survival."

"I had the pleasure of working at the New South Wales
Institute of Sports Medicine and have treated many
athletes. I'm very interested in treating sport-related
hip and knee problems and perform many key-hole
procedures to the hip and knee."

“I'm married, we have two young children and, other than
my family, my interests are sport, especially rugby, football
(I'm a keen Arsenal fan), motorsport, food and wine (both cooking and eating).”
