Functional Movement Screening

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a ranking and grading system that evaluates movement patterns. By screening movement patterns, the FMS identifies functional weakness, asymmetries, imbalance and limitations. Faulty movement patterns can cause mechanical stress- resulting in cumulative micro trauma – and thereby injuries. In addition these issues can reduce the effects of training and physical conditioning.

The FMS generates a Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most effective corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns.

The key to the FMS is that it consists of seven fundamental tests that requires "a balance of mobility and stability". These tests place the individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and stability is not utilized. It has been observed that many individuals who perform at very high levels are unable to perform these simple movements. These individuals are considered to be utilizing compensatory movement patterns during activity, thereby sacrificing "efficient movements" for inefficient ones. If compensation continues, then poor movement patterns will be reinforced leading to poor biomechanics.

Clinicians can monitor the FMS score to track progress and identify exercises and corrective strategies that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength in each individual.

The FMS utilizes simple language, making it easy for individuals, exercise professionals, and physicians to communicate clearly about progress and treatment.

In summary the FMS can identify people who are at risk of injury, and by correcting these faulty movement patterns can alleviate injury and even improve performance.
